Mary Jo has been in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction since 1985. She is a licensed Substance Use Disorder Counselor who has worked with people in treatment and recovery since 1987 and is very passionate about helping people recover and empowering them to celebrate their own journey of recovery.

In 2006, she helped establish USARA as a nonprofit advocacy organization and has served as the Executive Director since 2010. She has since led the organization to become a statewide peer-run Recovery Community Organization (RCO) and with the support of community partners and the Board of Directors, she opened Utah’s first Recovery Community Center in Salt Lake County to provide a welcoming environment where individuals and family members could be given resources and compassionate support. USARA has grown to futher develop non-clinical Recovery Support Services and best practices for peer recovery coaching and family support. Mary Jo is most proud of USARA’s dedicated staff and volunteers who have expanded the awareness of people in recovery and become an incredible community of support and hope.

Mary Jo loves the life she lives and is truly grateful for her recovery, a loving family and an abundance of dear friends. Her greatest blessings are being a mom to two amazing daughters, being married to her best friend Shawn, and being a part of USARA. She adores children of all ages, loves dogs and sunsets, and her happy places are on a yoga mat, walks with her family, spending time by the ocean and in Utah’s beautiful desert!
