Darlene’s extensive knowledge of addiction and recovery comes from the lived experience of having family members who struggled with substance misuse. In 2010, she began her journey with USARA as a participant in the CRAFT family support group. She volunteered until 2017 and then was hired as the CRAFT Program Coordinator. Darlene manages all in-person and online CRAFT Family Support groups throughout Utah along with training volunteers interested in facilitating an online or in-person group. She also provides CRAFT training nationally for states interested in developing their own CRAFT Programs to educate families on motivational strategies for interacting with their loved ones who struggle with a substance use disorder.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Utah, taught first grade for 35 years, and now has cultivated a deep sense of purpose and commitment to USARA’s Family Support team.
Darlene is a wife, mother, and proud grandma to two very special kids. In 2012, she lost her son Adam to an overdose, yet continues to change the hearts and minds of people with negative perceptions toward substance use disorders.
